Issues

Work with the Police and Community to Stop Violent, Drug-Driven, and Quality of Life Crime
  • Involve our youth, especially teenage boys, in positive youth development and community service programs, without which none of the other recommendations here can be fully successful.
  • Reduce rampant shoplifting by prosecution, commercial security alliances, awareness, and stiffer penalties, particularly for repeat offender
  • Stop the opioid, especially fentanyl epidemic, through extensive public education, more enforcement and apprehension of drug dealers, and stiffer sentences for drug crimes.
  • Reduce automobile theft and vandalism by stronger community action and Neighborhood Watch and related efforts and greater investigative efforts by police.
  • Bring more rational allocation of resources through use of social workers and urgent care centers to save police time for more serious crime and reduce the needless expenditure of millions of dollars for ambulances and fire personnel time.
  • Reduce panhandling on public grounds that place the panhandlers and motorists in danger.
  • Work with Metro using technology and personnel to stop the increasing number of fare evaders costing the system millions of dollars.

    NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT AND PROTECTION
  • Build neighborhoods – Small community empowerment grants for neighborhood cleanup and better environment, safety, school support, green transportation, VOLUNTEER MASON.
  • Support a limited edition of the new parking ordinance that will reduce unused commercial parking spaces with community-connected green space.
  • Support affordable housing units mixed with a greater number of market rate housing.
  • Create more walkable, bikeable communities with green space and access to public transportation.
  • Stop polluting our air, water, and earth by limiting or banning the use of plastic bags, plastic straws, and other commercially-related non-biodegradable items.
  • Inspect to ensure that real recycling and composting is taking place.
  • Assist neighborhoods in need with a resettlement house model that leaves no one behind.
    RETURN TO WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION
  • Provide opportunity for all students to reach maximum achievement through flexible forms of education, support for students who need it.
  • Enhance academic standards
  • Connect with parents to gain their support and input into curriculum
  • Expand the number of School Resource Officers for prevention and education and enforcement when needed.
  • For sex education, create an opt-in for those classes rather than opt-out for parents who feel these classes can attack the innocence of their children.
    TRANSPORTATION
  • Support a safe and clean Metro with expansion to a second tunnel under the Potomac. Insist that the long-term plan creates a Metro Route through the Mason District and Arlington Boulevard.
  • Experiment with tax breaks or other aids to stores and commerce to bring more delivery of purchases and thus reduce use of customer automobiles.
  • Experiment with a flex transportation system that will deliver people from their block corner to the nearest Metro station.
    REPRESENTATION
  • I will meet with Mason District Council of Neighborhoods and each neighborhood quarterly, and create diverse group of advisors, including youth, for our diverse District.
