THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. WE HAD A GOOD CAMPAIGN!

Friends and all Residents in the Mason District,

In the months leading up to November 7 I have had the wonderful opportunity to meet many of you and to learn about your lives and problems and perspectives. Those experiences reinforced my hope and determination to serve you as Mason District Supervisor. However, on November 7 voters chose the other candidate on the ballot, Andres Jimenez. I wish Mr. Jimenez the best. May the Mason District have peace, justice, prosperity, and further the American Dream for all our residents.

An Independent candidate like me leans heavily on friends to put together materials, spread the word about the campaign and reach voters at the polls. There are many to thank, including my friend Eddie Cheris who spent many hours assembling materials for mailing, and precinct Election Day workers Rosemarie Wilson, who also worked to the early hours of the morning distributing signs at the polls, and Mark Zeller, Iqbal Khaiy, Dave Steinbacher, John Lynch, John Leverett, Fanuel Haile, Nancy Blount, Dixie Miro (who is always out there at 5:30 am before the polls open), and Donna Jacobson, who volunteered but caught COVID. Many Republicans at the precinct level also supported me (my opponent was a Democrat). I thank Carey Campbell and the Independent Green Party of Virginia for their endorsement. I thank my funders, including George Farris, John Murray, my sister Sandy Pasby, Anne Helliwell, and Mike Conners. Special thanks to my daughter Rachel McLain, who did all my Facebook profile posts; Staples, which did a tremendous design and cost-efficient print job of my mailer card; and webmaster Steve Viemeister, who did something new and great. I also want to thank those who placed my sign in their yards.

The election is over, and my campaigns are finished, but the issues that motivated my campaign are not. I will continue as a citizen in the Mason District to work with Andres Jimenez or any other official or similar-minded person to reduce crime, especially the shoplifting surge we see, to have a renewal of standards in our Fairfax County schools, and to strive for a cleaner and greener Mason where public transportation will be a preference for all groups not a last resort for some. And I will never give up my efforts to protect the sanctity of life, the creation we inherited, and the youth who are our future.

Sincerely,

Terry Modglin

I WILL SERVE FOR YOU

Neighbors, friends, residents of our Mason District, we are a vibrant area of Fairfax County rich with history and human resources. How we respond to the public challenges and opportunities before us will determine whether we are a desired place to live and destination for generations to come. Mason District should continue to be a place of established, stable neighborhoods as well as a place where new Americans come to begin their journey to the American dream, a place where new ideas make it cleaner and greener. I want the “Mason District” to be synonymous with great dining, important meetings, and international education – because we already have the resources to do that. Our Fairfax County institutions should be shaped to help maintain and enhance our quality of life. Challenges can be met with our new ideas.

We cannot be a better place to live unless we acknowledge and understand the obstacles that face us. I can be a leader working always with you to make Mason better. I have lived these challenges in my personal and professional life, growing up in a tough environment, improving myself through education, serving my country in war, being heavily involved in the legislative process, working with youth, schools and communities across the country for decades, being a community leader in our area, and working with people of all colors and backgrounds at all levels.

Challenge Number One– reducing crime, fentanyl, and disorder. Certain statistics may make us safer than many other places, but our eyes see the shoplifting, property crime, fare evasion in the Metro, increased violent crime, drug trafficking in fentanyl – in a degree we have not seen in decades. It is particularly troubling that young people are involved in much of this when they can be the leaders to overcome it. Is there hope to overcome this? Absolutely, the answer is yes, through prevention, enforcement, and accountability. And I worked successfully for decades to address these problems.

Challenge Number Two – creating quality education. Our standards and achievement have declined for several reasons. We are a multi-faceted society but parents must trust the system to educate without upsetting the values and way of life they are instilling in their children. We can do this and still be inclusive. We should have a public school system in which students can reach their maximum potential. We need higher standards – no one rises to low expectations. We also need a lot of help from the community for New Americans, a kind of settlement house model.

Challenge Three – getting cleaner and greener – As an older part of the County, we have a built environment that was car-centric. Our people still need cars for jobs and getting personal things done – that’s a reality. But the automobile traffic has also made life more difficult for many. We need more walkable and bikeable communities, more canopy, more recycling and composting, more community action to reduce waste. We need “More Trains, Less Traffic,” and innovations in public transportation that take traffic off the street. We will be cooler, happier, healthier if we do so. We are not alone – the whole planet needs to improve, now.

Challenge Four – inspiring community involvement – Like any team, together we are stronger and greater than just the sum of our parts. We need a call to action, more of a sense of community, valuing what we have here and building upon it. I CARE ABOUT YOU, I WILL MEET WITH YOU, LISTEN TO YOU, AND I WILL REMEMBER YOU WHEN I MAKE DECISIONS AS SUPERVISOR.

I understand that this is a 24/7 job. Penny Gross has filled this role for nearly three decades, making great personal sacrifices for public office. She has been a steady, unassuming leader. Whether you agree with her or not on policy, we owe her our great thanks, all of us. I too have lived those 24/7 roles as a leader – for decades as well. Give me the opportunity to serve you, and I will show you how my EXPERIENCE, COMMITMENT, AND CONTINUED CONNECTION TO YOU will make Mason a better place to live.

Sincerely,
Terry Modglin
